We want to support you every step of the way on your journey with us and we understand that sometimes when you are experiencing problems it can be helpful to talk about them with someone else. Often that might be friends, family or a member of staff, but sometimes it can also be helpful to talk to an impartial counsellor who is outside of the situation, and who has experience in discussing similar issues.
Student Services offers a short term, self-referral, Counselling & Mental Health service. Our specialist counsellor is an expert in talking about a range of mental health topics including:
• Anxiety
• Bereavement
• Depression
• Stress
• Loss of appetite or change in eating habits
• Worries about drugs or alcohol.
In order to register with our service, you’ll simply need to fill in our registration form linked below. This should take around 5 minutes. You only need to complete this form once per academic year.
Once you’ve registered, you’ll immediately receive an acknowledgement email, which will lead to the scheduling system to book your preferred appointment date and time.
Make sure to save the link for further bookings when needed.
If you’re concerned about a friend or fellow student who appears to be in distress, it’s important to offer your support. Here are some steps you can take:
-
Initiate a Conversation: Approach your friend with empathy and care. Express your concern and let them know you’re there to listen.
-
Be a Good Listener: Allow your friend to talk openly without judgment. Sometimes, simply being heard can provide immense relief.
-
Offer Assistance: Encourage your friend to seek professional help if their distress seems severe or persistent. You can suggest contacting our counseling services or another mental health provider.
-
Respect Their Choices: It’s important to respect your friend’s decisions regarding seeking help. Offer your support but avoid pushing them into anything they’re not ready for.
-
Stay Connected: Continue to check in on your friend regularly. Knowing that someone cares can make a significant difference in their journey toward healing.
-
Seek advice: If you notice that your friend’s mental state is deteriorating, you can book a session with our counsellor to ask for further advice.
Remember, you don’t have to have all the answers. Your role as a supportive friend is invaluable, and together, we can help each other navigate life’s ups and downs.
If you or someone you know is in immediate crisis or danger, please contact emergency services.
Who can access counselling?
This service is available all year round to all undergraduate students currently registered at the University.
What to expect from individual counselling?
Your consultation will last between 50 and 60 minutes. The time will be used to discuss your situation in more depth to help you gain a clearer understanding of your difficulties and of what might be helpful.
During your first session you will have read and sign a counselling service consent form. Many people find that a single counselling consultation will give them the support and insight they need to get on with their lives without further help. In some cases, however, the counsellor may suggest a follow-up appointment.
What if I need psychological treatment or long-term therapy?
We can also provide you with information about how to find a private counsellor or therapist.
How confidential is the service?
We are a confidential service. We will not share information with anyone unless you have given your consent for us to do so.
However, confidentiality is not absolute. In extreme cases we may share relevant information if a student/other is at significant risk (in cases of emergency or crisis where your safety or others is at risk).
Do you charge for this service?
The service is free for all current (enrolled) undergraduate Students of the British University in Egypt.
Is there a time when I can drop in?
We do not run a drop in as we are an appointment only service, you will need to register first in order to get an appointment.
