Who We Are
The BUE Disability and Specific Learning Difficulties (DSLD) services aim to provide guidance and support for both current and prospective students with a disability or a specific learning difficulty (SpLD) to help them achieve their academic goals. The DSLD services can support students with free, confidential and friendly advice and support. In consultation with individual students the DSLD services can also help to develop and implement Reasonable Adjustments (or Accommodations) and study programmes for students.
The DSLD services can also offer general guidance and best practice for staff on teaching approaches for students with disabilities and SpLDs.
How We Can Help
We encourage all students and prospective students with a disability, SpLD or a long term physical or mental health condition to get in touch with the Student Hub as soon as possible so that we can discuss what options and support might be right for you.
The DSLD services can help to support students with:
- Specific Learning Difficulties including dyslexia and dyspraxia
- Sensory Impairments such as hearing loss and visual impairment
- Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
- Pre – diagnosed long term mental health conditions
- Long standing illnesses and health conditions
The above list is indicative and not exhaustive; if you have a comment or questions or would like to find out whether you would benefit from our support then please get in touch.
How to access Disability and Specific Learning Difficulties (DSLD) services
You must be able to provide formal evidence of your condition in order to access DSLD services and support.
Formal evidence would normally be a report from a suitably qualified medical practitioner that outlines:
- A formal diagnosis, type-written on official letterhead, and signed and dated by the evaluator.
- A summary of symptoms and how long you have experienced them.
- Likely impact on your studies as well as your daily life
- Any recommendations for Reasonable Adjustments (or Accommodations) that align with any functional limitations experienced (these will be assessed by BUE as applied as much as is reasonably possible)
- Ideally; assessment procedure, evaluation instruments, test scores and diagnostic criteria (such as the DSM-V).
We require the report and any associated assessment to have been conducted within the last 2 years.
If you have formal evidence, then you should meet with our team to discuss what support may be put in place.
If you have an existing condition or believe you may have a yet undiagnosed condition, but do not have any formal evidence then please contact the Student Hub, for further advice on what you should do next. BUE works with a number of reputable external institutions who can assist in diagnosing conditions.
It’s important to note that students with disabilities or SpLDs are expected to meet all the required academic standards of their programmes of study. Reasonable Adjustments will allow students the best possible opportunities to meet the required learning outcomes.
You should be aware that evidence of an existing condition is not necessary to access our Student Wellbeing Service, our Academic Success Service or our Counselling & Mental Health Service.
